I checked out two different malls for prices and was given quotes between $320-220. Clearlycontacts.ca was somewhere around $176.
I then checked out Costco and was told $112 for 12 pairs for the same brand. I highly recommend checking out Costco for contact lenses.
which costco did you go to?

i tried contacts, every brand made my eyes dry... could it be the solution that was causing the dryness? because i never tried different solutions. I used the Green boxed one.

Point #1 is a mis-conception. When I investigated laser surgery, it has never resulted in blindness. The only problems I discovered was lack of improvement. Furthermore, you can easily get infections with contact lenses -- unfortunately, I learned that through personal experience. So contacts are not "safer".
And if you are doing surgery, you should know that with the cheap $500 option you won't get as good results as using the latest techniques that cost >$3000 per eye.
BTW, Costco's eye centre sucks. You have to make an appointment with them before buying anything. Even though my wife and I already had a prescription, the attendent wouldn't take my order. It was very inconvenient. In the end we didn't buy at Costco and went to a real optical store. We're covered by insurance anyway and the service is much better in a real store.

I don't think I can afford laser surgery just yet. I've had trouble with contacts for quite a while and don't think I'd want to go for laser surgery till I feel comfortable with wearing contacts again. Besides, my prescription is deteriorating pretty fast.
The Kid, I don't think there's any taxes on contact lenses. Therefore, I believe the final price I pay will be $112. What is this other place you're getting contacts from for $116? I'd like to keep it in mind for future.
FTO, I only saw Acuvue contacts in the showcase, but I asked and was told they'll order Proclears for me and they should arrive in the next 2-3 days.
redflagger, I went to the one in Markham, Ontario.
geestring, if I were you I'd see an optometrist and try out a whole bunch of trial pairs. I also have dry/very dry eyes and pretty much gave up on contacts till now because nothing suited my eyes. I just couldn't put them on. However, after trying several different brands Proclear seems to be suiting my eyes.

I second that... but contacts are bad too. So Lasik maybe an alternative for those who must not wear ordinary eyeglasses for whatever reason. It's best to avoid both contacts and Lasik.

I am not sure about the blindness figure but my advice to avoid lasik is from someone who actualy perform these a few years back, he is a close friend of my father-in-law. Basically, lasik long term effectiveness and safety is still in study, but one thing for sure. If there is any damage, the damage is permanent and irreversible.
Contact lens aren't any better compare to Lasik, but damage is usually reversible.

My wife did not have to make an appointment to purchase frame and lenses. I don't see why you need to wait for contacts either when in both cases you already have a prescription.

Unfortunately our local Costco in Richmond B.C. has a deal with the local optometrists association not to sell glasses or contact lenses to anyone without a prescription from a Richmond optometrist - not even a Vancouver optometrist will do! They actually said it was a law, so I asked them to show me that law. They produced a letter from the Richmond optometrists association asking them to please accept only prescriptions written by Richmond optometrists!

I guess YMMV with the appointment thing. This was at the Markham (West) location. They insisted that we use their optometrist. It was difficult enough for the both of us to go there with our newborn in tow, but they wanted us to make an appointment and come back in the work week. We were not happy to say the least.

Actually that Costco deal wasn't better deal at all if you look at Coastal Contacts (the same as Clearlycontacts, just the American side of the site)
Coastal has them for:
$107.71 US
= $114 CAD
less 17.5% (RFD Coupon)
= $97.02
Normally I find the two pretty close - but I find Coastal more convenient.

Given not everybody can have this done and it may not work on all types of vision problems, but still... If you could afford the cost of the procedure (which I thought it was something like $500+ an eye) wouldn't it be worth it for the possibility of 20/20 vision or close?
I'm wanting your opinions since my mom needs to use glasses and was wondering what people with vision problems think. Thanks.
hehe...way to....though a valid and appropriate (somewhat) thread to do it in .

how the HECK did you get an infection? I consider myself quite clean, but on certain camping trips I dreaded the possible repercussions and I've NEVER had any infections as a result of contact use and dirty hands. What exactly did you do to result in this?
Also, halos and reduced night vision??? Is this really still an issue today, or was this an issue with the early years of lasik?
FYI $500/eye is for someone with <1 prescription, and ZERO astigmatism....what NOBODY has. Even the slightest astigmatism, and the slightest strength of prescription send the figure EASILY over double that. So -when you get that warm and fuzzy (I-think-this-just-may-be-in-my-budget-feeling)...remember that you'll invariably end up spending DOUBLE that $999 for both eyes promo pricing advert they keep bombarding us with.

Zero? I don't think so. I have been wearing contact lens for more than 25 years. I never have a problem, but I have also been aware of its potential health hazards. If you talk about probability, I'd say laser surgery is actually safer by the number.
Okay, Let's Talk About DOMAIN NAMES

Thanks, I've been wondering about that.
Most people tend to say they have paid about $5000 to have this done.
The $500 ads just don't add up.

Could be carelessness on my part. Could be just old contacts that got damaged or dirty.
Anyway, in terms of risk of infection, I'd say the risk with contacts is actually higher than laser because of the frequency of having to putting it on and off -- and sometimes the user is not that alert and clean when doing so. E.g. it's difficult to take it off after some late night drinking or put it on early in the morning (or a combo of both). :-)
A doctor does 1 complex procedure on 2 eyes just once with laser, versus a patient doing a simple procedure on 2 eyes 2x365 times per year for the rest of their life with contacts. Assuming the patient practices the same infection control as the doctor every single time (which is not likely to happen), contacts would still be riskier over a patient's lifetime.

I'm on Coastal Contacts' Canadian website and for 4 boxes of Proclears it's coming out to: $176.67. So even after taking off 17.5%, it's still coming out to approx. $145. Of course unless I'm doing something wrong to end up with a relatively larger amount.

You need to buy from the "US" site. Don't worry about any taxes because they come from Vancouver, at least my order from last year did. Any idea with the 17.5% deal ends?
