Ondanks of dankzij de problemen is Apocalypse Now - over kapitein Willard (Sheen) die opdracht krijgt om de mythische en gestoorde kolonel Kurtz (Brando) te vinden - een ongekend krachtige (anti)oorlogfilm geworden over onmacht, waanzin en wanhoop. Super.

Coppola maakte van het ruwe materiaal van zijn Apocalypse Now (200 uur) een nieuwe film. Althans naar eigen zeggen. Slechts een paar scènes springen eruit als nieuw. De basis blijft dat kapitein Willard (Sheen) in Vietnam een geheime opdracht krijgt om de geniale doch losgeslagen kolonel Kurtz (Brando) te liquideren. De zwakte van het origineel, een haperend tempo, wordt vooral verergerd door een nieuwe, te lange sequentie met Franse kolonisten. De kracht - bizarre gebeurtenissen in overweldigende beelden - is toegenomen door enkele maffe sequenties en het opkrikken van de kleuren. Het laatste oordeel: hoe meer Apocalypse Now (en later), hoe beter.
